Kayla Johnson

Grade 1

Central Connecticut State University - B.S.

Kayla Johnson joined Renbrook in 2021 and serves as a First Grade Teacher in the Lower School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Central Connecticut State University and holds a Connecticut 305 Certification for Elementary Education Grades PK to 6. She has also completed training in Responsive Classroom, a framework that supports her belief in educating the whole child.

Kayla’s professional journey began with internships in several elementary schools during college and a role as a Teacher Assistant at Braeburn Elementary School in West Hartford. At Renbrook, she has worked with students in Preschool and Kindergarten before stepping into her current First Grade classroom. This progression has deepened her understanding of how young learners grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

While Kayla is dedicated to teaching strong academic skills, she finds her greatest fulfillment in helping students become thoughtful leaders and compassionate human beings. She believes every child matters and leaves a meaningful imprint on the world. In her classroom, she intentionally creates opportunities for rest, reflection, and self-regulation, recognizing that emotional awareness and empathy are essential foundations for lifelong success.

Kayla loves the Renbrook community and the authentic care that defines it. She sees school as a safe and nurturing place where children can feel secure enough to take risks and grow. Her goal each day is to ensure her students feel seen, heard, and valued.

Outside of school, Kayla enjoys spending time at the beach, being active, exploring nature, and connecting with friends and family. She shares her home with her rescued American Bulldog Boxer mix. Though she is passionate in the classroom, she admits one thing she cannot handle is spiders, a fact her students know well and happily help her manage.
